Crafts and Crafters at the Festival - 1st August 2008
One of the pleasures of the festival has been seeing many local crafts being made.

This is a woman from one of the local ethnic communities (don't blame me that is what they are called!) weaving. I bought a scarf and a couple of small bags from her

This and the next two slides are of coconut fibre mats (like the ones sold in NZ) being made using a wonderful wooden loom.

This man is weaving fishing nets
These two slides are of women weaving the rush mats that we can buy in NZ

I loved some of this woman's weaving but it was not for sale.

Men making elaborate wooden vases
These young people are making the very decorative mother-of-pearl inlays for furniture

The metal implements on these two slides are all made on a small hand forge
This man is making a musical gong - they have a beautiful sound

This young man was making these 'fimo' nick-nacks. Each only took him a minute or so to make

Popping rice (like popcorn) in hot sand

I could have bought one of these fantastic Cham faces from am antique dealer for two million Dong. I was sorely tempted but in the end decided that it is unethical to support dealing in relics. They certainly looked and felt genuine.
Some of the really "fabulous" items

A bread dragon

This chair appeared to be carved from one piece of wood. I could not find any evidence of joins
If I could have bought just the teapot I would have but a whole tea service in shells was too much even for me

And last but not least - I could have bought an entire lounge suite covered in shells - comfortable, attractive and unique!!!!!
