Hoi An – Visit to the Ceramic Village – 31st August 2008

During Sunday morning we went to visit a ceramics village near the city. One of the old women there has been making pots for over 50 years. She and her daughter worked in unison. The old woman deftly formed the pot while the daughter spun a wheel with her foot and prepared the clay for the next pot on a tabletop. Together they were able to produce a pot, just as you would find in The Warehouse, within a few minutes. It continues to amaze me to see the things we purchase, assuming that they have been made in a factory, being made in small cottage industries. Seeing people making crafts continues to be one of my greatest pleasures here.

Many years of making pots mean that these women can complete one in minutes while hardly looking at their work

A fresh mound of clay is bought in daily by boat

I enjoyed these horses in their altar - I guess that I have discovered the intended purpose of my nodding horses!
